(soggy) Autumn Leaves

This isn't so interesting, but in the course of an evening spent reflecting on random things instead of writing this stupid essay (anger! chomp chomp! gnashing teeth!) I was thinking about fall, and what it is like at home. I realized that a prime adjective for autumn-time at home is "crisp", as in "the crisp autumn air" or "the crisp smell of leaves" or "crisp fall apples". But in Sweden, so far, autumn has been rather damp. There's a lot of rain. So you wouldn't really say "crisp" then, would you? This has huge ramifications! Can you really make "apple crisp" in a place where the fall isn't genuinely crispy?! I don't know! We must go to a higher authority on crispiness:

Kia Shine, crispy (*krispy) expert. or, perhaps the Urban Dictionary, source of infinite wisdom has an aswer?

Reader comments always welcome!!!

  1. Brita! I have a Nebraska report: autumn has not been exceptionally crispy here this year, either.

And I must say, I much prefer the delightful crunch of dried leaves under foot to the squicky squish of melt-y leaf detrius that we've been having. Stupid rain.

(and I, also, have a accidental delicious/cheap black bean reicpe : make rice. cook black beans with 1 onion, garlic and cumin. serve beans over rice. generously squeeze lime over the whole shebang = instant cuban food!)

  2. Steve Gadd's brush technique is the essence of crispness.

In the military, I heard creases in uniform trouser legs referred to as crisp.

by the way, in case you haven't heard...Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain were beyond amazing...to the point I ordered my own set of tablas!

also, scooter and I are improvising a soundtrack (with some loops) to an old Kenneth Anger short called "Rabbit's Moon" (it's on YouTube)...DO NOT watch it the first time with the sound on, and imagine berimabu and spooky loops and crotales and bells...THEN watch it with the sound on.

anyway, glad you're enjoying yourself...miss having you around, and I have some ideas about a piece we could do together next year if we're still here.

    later Higgins!

  3. Brita,

I'm sure you can make apple crisp even if the weather isn't "crisp". Maybe making apple crisp will even help to crisp up the weather!

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but if your friend hasn't gone to Latvia yet, I'd love to have a pair of Latvian mittens! Let me know what works out.

    Love,
    Meemo
