Rant

I still hate computers. I thought I was over it - but it doesn't matter that they allow me access to the whole world wherever I am, I still hate them! I hate waiting for them, I hate spending time with them, I hate listening to music on them, and I don't even really like looking at them. They're bad friends - they demand that you handle them well and provide them with energy, and then they isolate you from your surroundings and give you a headache. Sure, it may make it easier to communicate and thus connect with other people, but maybe the ease of it encourages you to do a shoddy job, just like digital cameras encourage you to take worse pictures. Just take this post for example. If I had to write this with pen and paper, do you think I would have done such a bad job? No!

  1. But, just because you *can* do a bad job doesn't mean you *can't* do a good job. What you have to do is take the time to edit what you write. Just like you would with pen and paper, but with a computer, you don't have to waste the paper that has your drafts on it.

I agree that computers are bad friends, and that they can be isolating, but that is more a function of how you use them than anything else.

Take this for what it's worth,

  2. You're in very good company with that attitude, Brita. I've been in a love/hate relationship with the things for years, and I make my living working on them. It's agreed that their presence in your life creates at least as many problems as they supposedly solve...just like every other "labor saving" invention.

I think it's just another example of the hurtful duality of our human existence writ large.

But gosh, Linux Mint sure is pretty when it boots up...!
